This program complements the curriculum already in place in middle- and high-schools and can be used as an activity for classes, groups, and other related clubs. LifeSmarts is open to all sixth through twelfth grade students in the United States.

LifeSmarts began in 1994, and has been a program of the National Consumers League since 2000. Life Smarts is a program locally coordinated by state partnering organizations and agencies. LifeSmarts topics have been chosen to reward and encourage knowledge in the areas that matter most to workers and consumers in today's marketplace: personal finance; health and safety; the environment; technology; and consumer rights and responsibilities.

After hearing of these events, Cumberland High School has decided to join Life Smarts in the fight to help citizens become knowledgeable of the consumer and marketplace skills. One Florida coach said "In today's tough economic times, Life Smarts provides teens with the kind of valuable knowledge that they will use throughout their lives." This program is inspiring many young kids to learn the ways to gain control of their future, and Cumberland High only hopes the same for all of their students.

Mrs. Bandoni speaks to each incoming class as they enter the High School in order to make herself available to students. Substance abuse as well as physical abuse are major reasons to report oneself, friends, or family for Student Assistance. The primary reason for the program is for substance abuse although Mrs. Bandoni may be able to help students with other problems that are affecting their life. The student does not have to be the victim of the abuse in order to meet with a counselor as abuse among the student's family or peers can cause extreme stress in their school and home life. The student does not have to report themselves, but can also be recommended by teachers/administrators, parents/guardians, or a friend. The program is designed to give students a safe-haven to rely on in case they are in need of someone to speak to about their stress. This counseling may also be required due to a violation of the school substance abuse policy. Mrs. Bandoni provides information and resources for substance related issues.

Mrs. Bandoni can be found on the first floor of the main building of Cumberland High School in H200. She can also be contacted by telephone: (401) 658-2600 ext. 228. In addition to speaking to the Student Assistance Counselor, there are numerous other resources that may be of help to a student in need of assistance such as DCYF, Suicide Hotline, Day One (sexual assault), National Runaway, AA Referral, Al-Anon & Alateen Family Groups, Narcotics Anonymous, Planned Parenthood, and Well One Primary Care/Health Services. Contact Mrs. Bandoni if you or a friend seek help due to substance abuse, physical abuse, depression, pregnancy, or other problem that may interfere with your school or home life!

To celebrate, the High School Theater is building a show to represent the years 1961 through ‘62 and 2011. The theater members are interviewing students of 2011 and graduates from 1962, which was the first graduating class of the building, to get as accurate a portrayal of the school as possible. Bullying, pregnancy, relationships of all kinds, and the way students dress are some of the topics on which people are being interviewed.
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, since the beginning of September, theater members have been staying after school and working vigorously on the show. The name of the production has yet to be determined. However Mr. DiMartino, the director/producer of the show is leaning toward the title “Ahead of Time.” DiMartino believes this would be a suitable name because the show starts in the 1961 time zone, and ends in the year 2011.
Opening night will be on December Ninth, 2011 but the running time of the show is unknown. Theater members hope to be supported for all of their hard work, so buy a ticket and enjoy the show.

Students have shown less enthusiasm this year toward the dress up days and events. These days include backwards day, celebrity day, class color day, character day, and school color day. A shocking lack of excitement was shown on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Spirit Week is a time in which students battle against each other and opposing classes in games and competitions to determine which class is most spirited; this year it seems, however, to be a competition of who is least spirited. Many student's and administrators are wondering, why is there suddenly a plunge in passion? The answer is unknown to the entire CHS student body, but can be acquitted to the change in traditional dress up days as well as cancelled night-time events.

Spirit Week at Cumberland High School is always kicked-off with a talent show. This year the event was postponed for unknown reasons. Starting the week off without a spirited event. The following event was Minute-to-Win-It, held on Tuesday night. This event replaced the legendary Powderpuff Football Game that was put to rest under accusations of sexist and violent tendencies a few years ago. Class Clash took place on Wednesday night and resulted in extreme disappointment from administration due to substance abuse, violence, and disrespect.

Following this poor display of spirit, the week's coordinators postponed the annual Lip Sync for unspoken reasons. After postponing two of the spirit week events, administrators seem perplexed as to why students are unable to display appropriate behavior in competition.

NECAP scores can be ranged from a 1 to a 4, and all students are mandated to receive at least a 2 on their NECAP tests in order to be able to graduate. If students do not meet this requirement, they are forced to retake the NECAP test in their senior year. Last week all junior students, and some senior students, have worked to their best ability taking these NECAPS, which cover material learned from their previous 3 years in their science courses. Many students found difficulty with these particular NECAPS, seeing as though they had a complex time in remembering the materials in the NECAP tests.
These NECAP tests lasted over a course of 3 days in the week, each day covering 1 section at a time. Within these sections, students faced a series of either multiple choice questions or questions in which students were required to think for themselves, and form answers based on data that was given. Many students view NECAPS as a frivolous waste of time; however NECAPS do help students to obtain more efficient test-taking skills, and help them to try to their utmost ability so as to not have to take them again. For this year, the science NECAPS have completed, and currently this week, all algebra students are working their best to complete the algebra NECAPS.
